Acid reflux, a very dangerous disease that can become chronic

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is when stomach acid or gas flows back up into the esophagus, causing inflammation of the esophagus, resulting in a burning sensation in the chest, sour burping, and nausea after eating.

Causes of Acid Reflux

  • Abnormal stomach contractions cause food to remain in the stomach longer than normal. In particular, foods high in fat cause the stomach to contract less.
  • Abnormal contraction of the esophagus causes food to enter the stomach slowly, causing food to remain in the esophagus.

Symptoms of Acid Reflux

  • Heartburn in the epigastric region after eating.
  • Burping, sour taste in mouth or throat
  • Flatulence , bloating, feeling like indigestion
  • Nausea and vomiting after eating
  • I have a dry throat and a hoarse voice.
  • I feel a lump in my throat.
  • Asthma
  • Feeling irritated in the throat or having phlegm in the throat all the time
  • Excessive saliva, bad breath, tooth sensitivity or tooth decay

Complications of acid reflux

Esophageal stenosis

In some patients with chronic scar tissue caused by inflammation can narrow the esophagus, interfering with the flow of food to the stomach.

Esophagitis

Inflammation or irritation of the esophageal mucosa caused. If left untreated for a long time, it can lead to severe inflammation that can lead to bleeding wounds.

Esophageal mucosa changes

It is caused by the cells of the food lining changing to accommodate. It has a small chance of occurring in people who have chronic acid reflux for a long time. The cells that have changed may be abnormal and may develop into cancer cells.

Esophageal cancer

There are two types: adenocarcinoma of the lower esophagus and squamous cell carcinoma of the middle and upper esophagus.

Risk factors

  • There is a habit of eating too much spicy food and then immediately falling asleep.
  • Overweight
  • Stress, alcohol consumption, smoking
  • Taking certain medications, such as asthma medications.

Diagnosis of acid reflux

  • Ask about history, symptoms and perform a general physical examination.
  • Esophageal contraction test
  • Contrast X-ray
  • Gastrointestinal endoscopy
  • Esophageal pH measurement
