The ABO System

Blood type classification uses the ABO system. This system determines blood type based on the presence or absence of A and B antigens on the surface of red blood cells. These antigens help your immune system identify whether a substance is foreign (from outside) or part of your body.

The four main groups of blood types based on the ABO system include:

  • Type A blood: Has A antigens on red blood cells’ surface and anti-B antibodies in the plasma
  • Type B blood: Has B antigens on red blood cells’ surface and anti-A antibodies in the plasma
  • Type AB blood: Has A and B antigens on red blood cells’ surface and no anti-A or anti-B antibodies in the plasma
  • Type O blood: Has no A or B antigens on red blood cells’ surface but has both anti-A and anti-B antibodies in the plasma

The Rh System

Blood type classification also considers the Rh factor, a separate antigen found on the surface of red blood cells. The Rh factor can be either present or absent, which adds another layer of complexity to blood typing.

  • Rh-negative (Rh-): The Rh antigen is absent
